“Bollocks!” – an oh-so-true quote on succeeding as a writer

5 09 2012

“This appeared at the end of an otherwise straightforward piece of market info in a writers’ mag: ‘And remember, if you are a pessimist you will never succeed as a writer. Determination and perseverance win out in the end.’

“Bollocks! We’re always being told – not just as writers, but at school, at work, everywhere that the system lies to the people – that if you are good enough and you work hard enough sooner or later you’ll make it. This dishonest and cruel maxim lies at the very heart of the dishonest and cruel HowToWrite industry.

“The truth, easily divined by a moment’s serious thought, is that alternative history is littered with people who never got anywhere because they weren’t in the right place at the right time; people like Shakespeare …”

The above is from Mat Coward’s Success … And How to Avoid It, a book I only recently came across and shall be quoting from again on this blog. I love it!
